Looks like he’s going deeper… Love it.
Video by artist Lorenzo Durantini
Starts kinda weird, ends kinda wonderful.
The sound of classical music and gorgeous violin solos wafting from my dad’s room remind me of when I was a child. He used to play it every weekend on the record player. I used to hate it.
I don’t remember why.
It’s funny yet amazing, how the sound is now so comforting.
Four Tet - Looking Backward, Moving Forward
I’m into my second week being back on radio. I’ve wanted to be on Lush for a long time but the timing wasn’t right… until now.
A lot has changed in Singapore and some things remain the same. Many people probably don’t listen to radio anymore - we live in a world of our own playlists.
I came back specifically to Lush because I’d heard it was in danger of being shut down. For many years now Lush has represented an “alternative” voice. It is a place for everything that isn’t mainstream, for everything that is “indie” i.e. independent. Unlike many other stations it is also a huge supporter of art and culture in Singapore. The idea that this voice was no longer going to exist scared the shit out of me.
Most people really like Lush, they appreciate less talk, more music. It’s ecclectic, easy to listen to and it’s a place of discovery, which is probably the most enjoyable element to music. When we feel we’ve heard it all before, it’s always an amazing feeling when we realize that we actually haven’t. Whether we know it or not we enjoy something new and different, especially when it comes to music.
The problem is, we don’t always acknowledge it. We think it’s always going to be around or we just don’t pay enough attention so we slowly start to not care anyway.
Moving to LA to make music taught me something very important - if I believe in something, I must make the effort to support that belief to the fullest of my abilities.
I believe people don’t want to listen to shit music. I believe that music listeners are now far more open-minded than we think they are. I believe people genuinely care about local musicians. I believe people don’t think art and culture are boring. I believe traditional media will not die if it remains connected to the community. I believe that the media should consider their cultural relevance responsibly instead of obsessing over how many people are clicking/reading/watching/listening. I believe there are still people in media who care about quality over quantity.
Some people probably think I am crazy (to be fair I kind of am) and others think I am idealistic. Some people thought that I couldn’t do anything with music, but other people thought otherwise. But my friends, my family, my community - they always believed.
There will always be people who try to tell you it is the way that it is and there is nothing that you can do about it. I do not believe that. And if it means that I am idealistic then so be it. There is nothing wrong with being idealistic. It is important. I would rather follow through on idealism than act on ill intentions.
Idealistic people may be dreamers, but dreamers who make their dreams come true change the world.

I want to fly. I want to fly away
Everybody standing on the side of the road, staring up above and we don’t wanna let go. Holding onto an imaginary feeling that grows. Tell me now what do I know? Now what do we know? We believe in evolution built on a lie. Struggle hard and we don’t question how we live to survive. So tell me when’s it gonna be enough? Cos I just don’t know why I feel like I am a caged bird living in a beautiful prison trying to tell you why I wanna fly away. There is something wrong but if we open our eyes and let the spirit take control of how we see with our eyes, believe the soul is something greater than a life you can buy - Love can build us stronger. Take us over. Celebrate the differences instead of divide. But still we slave ourselves in systems made to break us. Why? And everyday I wonder but I don’t know… Just don’t know why, I feel like I am a caged bird living in a beautiful prison, trying to tell you why I wanna fly away.
Can you hear me?
I wanna fly away.
